چکیده

Strong gravitational lensing provides a powerful means for studying faint galaxies in the distant universe. By magnifying the apparent brightness of background sources, massive clusters enable the detection of galaxies fainter than the usual sensitivity limit for blank fields. However, this gain in effective sensitivity comes at the cost of a reduced survey volume and, in this Letter, we demonstrate there is an associated increase in the cosmic variance uncertainty. As an example, we show that the cosmic variance uncertainty of the high redshift population viewed through the Hubble Space Telescope Frontier Field cluster Abell 2744 increases from ∼ 35% at redshift z ∼ 7 to & 65% at z ∼ 10. Previous studies of high redshift galaxies identified in the Frontier Fields have underestimated the cosmic variance uncertainty that will affect the ultimate constraints on both the faint end slope of the high-redshift luminosity function and the cosmic star formation rate density, key goals of the Frontier Field program. Frontier Fields: High-redshift Predictions and Early Results

The Frontier Fields program is obtaining deep Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope images of new “blank” fields and nearby fields gravitationally lensed by massive galaxy clusters. The Hubble images of the lensed fields are revealing nJy sources (AB mag > 31), the faintest galaxies yet observed. In this paper, we present high-redshift (z > 6) number count predictions for the full program and cand...

Gravitationally Lensed Arc Statistics as a Cosmological Probe

We calculate the expected number of gravitationally lensed arcs on the whole sky due to foreground galaxy clusters for different cosmological models. We use the redshift and magnitude distribution for sources in the Hubble Deep Field to describe the background galaxies, and model the foreground galaxy clusters as singular isothermal spheres. We account for the redshift evolution of foreground l...

A Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope Survey for Gravitationally Lensed Galaxies: Further Evidence for a Significant Population of Low-luminosity Galaxies

We present the results of a systematic search for gravitationally lensed continuumLyman break ‘‘dropouts’’ beyond a redshift 7 conducted via very deep imaging through six foreground clusters undertaken with theHubble and Spitzer space telescopes. The survey has yielded 10 z-band and two J-band dropout candidates to photometric limits of J110 ’ 26:2 AB (5 ). Taking into account the magnification...

Gravitationally Lensed μJy Radio Sources towards Galaxy Clusters

Galaxy clusters are expected to gravitationally lens background radio sources. However, due to the smaller surface density of radio sources, when compared to optical galaxies, such lensed events are rare. For an example, it is expected that there is no lensed radio source due to foreground galaxy clusters in the 1.4 GHz VLA FIRST survey. However, at the μJy level, the surface density of radio s...

Cosmology with Galaxy Clusters III. Gravitationally Lensed Arc Statistics as a Cosmological Probe

We calculate the expected number of gravitationally lensed optical, radio and sub-mm lensed sources on the whole sky due to foreground galaxy clusters for different cosmological models. We improve previous calculations of lensed arc statistics by including redshift information for background sources and accounting for the redshift evolution of the foreground lensing clusters. The background sou...
